Road leading to Heathrow closed for second time
Following on from our last post, National Highways have now closed the slip road off the M4, leading to Heathrow.
It’s the second time today the road has been shut.
National Highways says:
At the request Heathrow Airport the M4 southbound spur road is closed between the M4 and J4A, this is due to the amount of vehicles and pedestrians within the tunnel.

45-minute delay on road approaching Heathrow
National Highways says there are delays in excess of 45 minutes on the approach to the Heathrow Airport Tunnel.
The same road, which was closed earlier due to the disruption at Terminal 3, reopened at around 9.30am, but traffic continues to build.
“Delays in excess of 45 minutes on the M4 southbound spur road between the M4 and J4A.
“Please allow extra journey time if travelling to Heathrow Airport today,” National Highways says.

Five people taken to hospital after ‘pepper spray assault’ – and 21 treated in total
Five people were taken to hospital after being sprayed by what police described as a form of pepper spray, the London Ambulance Service says.
It says it treated a total of 21 people at the airport’s multi-storey car park in Terminal 3.
Earlier, police said injuries of those affected are not believed to be life-changing or life-threatening.
The ambulance service was stood down at 10.58am, shortly after the London Fire Brigade.

London Fire Brigade stood down
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson has confirmed that its crews have left the scene at Heathrow.
The brigade was first called to the Terminal 3 multi-storey car park at 8.14am this morning.
“Firefighters and officers have been working alongside multi-agency partners at the scene,” the spokesperson said.
The brigade was stood down at 10.34am, they added.

Police ‘remain on scene’ to ‘ensure safety’
The Metropolitan Police has posted on X in the last few minutes, with an update to reassure the public.
It stressed its officers are still at Heathrow Airport, where they are still investigating and working to protect people.
It said:
“Officers remain on scene following an assault at Heathrow Airport this morning.
“At this stage, it’s believed the incident involved a group of people known to each other and officers remain at the airport to continue enquiries and ensure the safety of those in the area.”

Passengers advised to ‘allow extra time’
Passengers heading to London Heathrow have been advised to allow extra time to get to the airport after this morning’s disruption.
The airport said individuals should also check with their individual airlines for any queries.
Terminal 3 is a major hub for long-haul flights, with airlines including American Airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic operating services there.

Police still searching for suspects – and what else we know so far
A search is under way to trace other suspects wanted in connection with the alleged assault at Heathrow Airport, police have said.
The Metropolitan Police said a group of men fled the scene after spraying a number of people with what they referred to as a form of pepper spray.
One man has been arrested, with officers working to track down the others.
We have heard from multiple emergency services on the situation at the multi-storey car park in the last hour.

Disruption continues on trains – even though lines have reopened
National Rail has said on its website that lines have been reopened after the police response at Heathrow.
That means trains can call at the airport “following the emergency services dealing with an incident at the airport”.
But National Rail added:
“Although lines have now reopened, disruption is expected to continue whilst services return to normal, delays of up to 10 minutes and cancellations can be expected until 11.45am.”

The London Fire Brigade has also released a statement after the incident at Heathrow Airport.
A spokesperson says:
We were called at 8.14am today to assist emergency service colleagues at an incident near Terminal 3 at Heathrow Airport.
Firefighters remain at the scene.

Treatment of those affected ‘ongoing’
London’s ambulance service has said it is still responding to the “significant incident” at Heathrow Airport.
It said there was a “full deployment” of services after the incident was declared at around 8.40am this morning.
Treatment of those affected by the reported assault is ongoing, Sky News understands – with injuries sustained not thought to be serious or life-threatening.

One man arrested after number of people sprayed with ‘form of pepper spray’, Met Police say
The Metropolitan Police has said a number of people were sprayed with “a form of pepper spray” at London’s Heathrow Airport earlier today.
One man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.
This is the force’s statement in full:
Police are in attendance at Heathrow Airport while we investigate the circumstances around the assault of a number of people this morning.
Officers were called at 08:11hrs to a multi-storey car park at Terminal 3 following reports of multiple people being assaulted.
A number of people were sprayed with what is believed to be a form of pepper spray by a group of men who then left the scene.
Armed response officers attended and arrested one man on suspicion of assault. He remains in custody and enquiries continue to trace further suspects.
London Ambulance Service attended and the victims were taken to hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be life-changing or life-threatening.
There is currently some disruption to traffic in the area and Terminal 3 remains open.
Commander Peter Stevens said: “At this stage, we believe the incident involved a group of people known to each other, with an argument escalating and resulting in a number of people being injured.
“Our officers responded quickly and there will be an increased police presence at Heathrow Airport throughout the morning, to continue enquiries and ensure the safety of those in the area.
“We are not treating this incident as terrorism. I understand the public’s concerns and would like to thank those in the area for their cooperation this morning.”

Road was closed due to Heathrow incident
A slip road off the M4 was closed earlier due to the incident at Heathrow, National Highways has said.
It said: “A serious incident within the Heathrow Airport Tunnel has resulted in the closure of the M4 spur road southbound between M4 and J4A.”
The Heathrow tunnel is a crucial link between Terminals 2 & 3 of the airport.
However, National Highways East later provided an update, saying: “Incident has been resolved and all closures lifted on the M4 southbound @HeathrowAirport spur road between M4 and J4A.
“Thank you for your patience and have a safe onwards journey today.”
